Blackmagic UltraStudio Express Recorder 3G Overview
Compact SDI and HDMI video capture for USB4 and Thunderbolt computers
UltraStudio Express Recorder 3G is a pocket-sized capture solution that lets you bring broadcast quality video straight into your laptop or desktop. Connecting via a single USB-C port with a 40Gbps signalling rate, it works with any Mac, Windows or Linux machine that has a USB4 or Thunderbolt connection — no internal card or bulky breakout box required.
It's built for editors, live streamers and content creators who need a reliable way to capture from a camera, deck or switcher straight into their editing or streaming software. The unit provides simultaneous 10-bit SDI and HDMI inputs, supporting SD and HD formats up to 1080p60, so you can capture from a broadcast SDI source and an HDMI source at the same time — or simply choose whichever connection suits your setup.
Key Features
- Dual format input — 1 x 3G-SDI input (270Mb/1.5G/3G, switchable SD/HD) and 1 x HDMI 2.0 input, both carrying 10-bit colour
- Embedded audio — 16 channels of embedded audio over SDI and 8 channels over HDMI
- Broad software compatibility — works natively with DaVinci Resolve and popular live-streaming and AI image processing tools including OBS, vMix and Wirecast
- Extensive codec support — captures to ProRes, DNx, AVC-Intra, uncompressed and many other professional formats
- Simple bus power — powered entirely over the USB-C cable, no external power supply needed
- Compact, portable design — ideal for on-set capture, edit suites, or mobile streaming rigs
Typical Uses
Capturing footage from cameras and decks for editing, ingesting broadcast SDI feeds for archiving, bringing switcher or vision mixer output into a computer for live streaming, and grabbing HDMI sources such as games consoles or presentation laptops for recording or webcasting.
