After owning a few different light stands and brands, the Manfrotto 1004BAC stands out from the rest, the locks lock unbelievably well, slim profile, and being able to stack a few together makes it a great purchase, the price is pretty decent too

This is a must have! Wow, that's a big statement but well deserved. The Manfrotto 1004BAC is the light stand to own for your studio or location photography. I have been in this industry since 1983 and have worked with many brands of photographic gear so I could tell you stories about how equipment has let me down for two fundamental reasons, design and quality! I nick named my stands "the black stack" as I could never remember 1004BAS and no one else knew what I'd be talking about if I did.I purchased "the black stack" as soon as I saw then. Firstly the quality of the simple design was impressive, compact ideal for stacking in the trunk (boot) of my car, taking up a lot less room than my standard Manfrotto 004 Air set. The quality of the construction is the best that you'll find. The stands never fail always open out with ease as they fold down with. The air cushion feature is a life saver as well as a flash tube and modelling light saver. How many times have I hit myself with lights because I've inadvertently knocked a knob on a cheap stand? The black stack has the best section column lock down that never fails and is fast. The maximum height is well above what I need but must say that it has been maxed out now many times on location. If I've ever used a large light, two small sand bags did the trick to make things stable.OK so here it is.Build and design....................10-10Reliability............................10-10Function and ease of use ...........10-10Value for money.....................10-10If you want a general-purpose light stand I think you'd have to be a fool not to buy "the black stack".
