The AT2040 has a large-diaphragm dynamic capsule in a classic end-address format, precisely like old broadcast-style mics used by pros. The hypercardioid polar pattern of the microphone not only produces a warm yet strong vocal tone, but it also picks up little ambient noise and room reflections.

    The AT2040 can lessen vocal plosives—popping noises from loud consonants like "p" and "b"—by utilising an internal multistage pop filter rather than an external pop screen. Moreover, the integrated shockmount reduces overall size while reducing noise from stand handling and other vibrations. The AT2040 should be utilised with a mic preamp that can deliver moderate to high gain due to its XLR 3-pin output connector and limited sensitivity. Being a dynamic mic, it requires no batteries or phantom power.
