Apart from the description and specs, there isn't much info on the web about this Sony mic at all, however, with little to go on, I took the plunge and bought one. I'm very glad I did. I therefore thought a review may be helpful for others considering this mic. I've had it a month and have tested it against other mic set ups I have, although I haven't been able to test it against the more commonly used shotguns, so this isn't a formal analysis, rather just my thoughts and observations.I am very happy with this mic. I concur with Sony's own description of this product found on their pro gear website. Marketing spin doesn't always translate well to an end users actual experience with the product, however, I feel it is pretty spot on in this case. It has wonderful sensitivity, low noise and in stereo mode, has a natural stereo spread without being too wide. Localization of sounds is excellent. I like recording environmental sounds both indoors/outdoors (haven't recorded music as yet). There is a lot to be said for an all in one stereo mic. I have used a pair of pencil condensers on a stereo bar for field recording, however it is such a hassle to set up & one has to consider phase, which miking technique to use, 2 blimps are cumbersome etc. One of the first things I noticed with the Sony was how solid sounds where in the stereo field. No drifting, very easy to follow. I haven't had a lot of experience with M/S stereo, but this mic provides a 3D aspect to the sound - there is great depth. The frequency response is quite flat & is a touch on the warm side of neutral. For me, it has a very engaging & endearing sound to it. It is smooth & quite transparent. My mid priced X/Y LDC stereo mic sounds a little veiled, cool & bombastic in comparison. Needs blimp/deadwombat etc for outdoor use. Used for indoor dialogue in a treated room. May be too smooth for some. Use in susp mount on boom pole/mic stand. Sound stage is usual MS letterboxy. L+R output only is fine with me.
