Locked HDMI and USB connections help prevent accidental cable disconnections when working on location.

Professional 32-Bit Float Recording

Four XLR/TRS combo inputs feature TASCAM Ultra HDDA microphone preamps, delivering clean, low-noise audio with an EIN of -127 dBu. Dual A/D converters and 32-bit float recording provide more than 133 dB of usable dynamic range, helping capture everything from quiet dialogue and ambient sound to sudden high-level sources without constantly adjusting recording levels.

For workflows that prefer smaller file sizes, the FR-AV4 can also record 24-bit PCM audio at 48, 96, or 192 kHz.

The built-in 4-in/2-out mixer allows you to record each input independently while simultaneously creating a stereo mix. This provides up to six recorded tracks—four isolated channels plus the stereo mix—giving you greater flexibility during post-production.

Auto Mixing for Multi-Microphone Productions

The FR-AV4 includes an Auto Mixer designed for interviews, meetings, conferences and other multi-speaker applications. Using gain-sharing technology, the Auto Mixer automatically manages input levels to help reduce background noise and produce a more natural-sounding mix when multiple microphones are in use.

HDMI, Timecode and Camera Synchronisation

Designed to integrate seamlessly with modern video cameras, the FR-AV4 features an onboard timecode generator and HDMI synchronisation using a shared master clock. Compatibility extends across cameras from manufacturers including Blackmagic Design, Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Panasonic and Sony.

Record Trigger allows compatible cameras to control recording on the FR-AV4, helping minimise the risk of missed takes. Dedicated 3.5mm timecode I/O and CAMERA TC output provide additional synchronisation options, while the optional TASCAM AK-BT2 Bluetooth adapter adds wireless timecode and monitoring functionality with compatible devices.

For larger productions, two FR-AV4 units can be cascaded via HDMI to provide up to eight synchronised inputs. HDMI video pass-through up to 4K/8K and embedded multichannel audio also make the FR-AV4 well suited to monitor-recorder and camera-based production workflows.

Flexible Audio Processing and Monitoring

The FR-AV4 provides a range of onboard processing tools to help shape your audio before it reaches the memory card. Built-in EQ, low-cut filter, limiter and noise gate functions give you greater control over your recordings, while adjustable input and output delay from 0 to 300 ms can help compensate for latency in more complex production setups.

Monitoring is equally flexible, with a dedicated monitor screen that lets you select and combine individual channels for real-time listening. Wired and optional Bluetooth monitoring can also be used simultaneously with independent volume control, making it practical for multi-person production environments.

Reliable Recording and File Management

For added protection against interruptions, TASCAM's Auto File Save function updates recording data every 20 seconds, helping safeguard work in progress. A built-in tone generator makes it easier to match levels and identify channels across connected equipment.

The FR-AV4 is also compatible with TASCAM Audio File Manager, allowing you to adjust 32-bit float recordings quickly without first importing them into a DAW.

For immersive and spatial production, the recorder includes an Ambisonics mode that records spatial audio in A-format or B-format, including AmbiX and FuMa workflows. This makes it suitable for VR, AR and 360° productions as well as conventional location recording.

USB-C Audio Interface and Remote Control

Beyond field recording, the FR-AV4 can function as a 6-in/2-out USB-C audio interface with Mac, Windows, iOS and Android devices. This makes it equally useful back in the studio, for streaming, live production, podcasting and computer-based recording.

Adding the optional AK-BT2 Bluetooth adapter enables wireless remote control and waveform monitoring through the TASCAM Recorder Connect app. TASCAM's REC-LINK function can also trigger simultaneous recording across up to five compatible TASCAM devices, including the FR-AV4, FR-AV2 and DR-10L Pro.
